The design of two Age Friendly fitness & community facilities for a small municipality in British Columbia is part of a wider provincial-municipal effort to develop communities where older people are supported to live active, socially engaged, independent lives.
The first design, an assemblage of shipping containers and wood screens, is inspired by the local economy and infrastructure - the train tracks which run through the heart of ‘downtown’ and the local lumber mill which is the gateway to main street.
The second proposal renovates an under-used and aging bowling alley. The renovated building includes a variety of community spaces: (1) an age friendly fitness and yoga shala, (2) a youth gym, (3) a community kitchen and dining room, (4) a daycare, (5) a multi-media room and (6) a community events boards.
