The Grand includes a street level addition to an existing liquor store, with tourist accommodation. The addition to the liquor store responds to increased demand for upscale wines and a possible diversification into the sale of legalized marijuana. The tourist accommodation above offers longer-term stays for families or small groups of adventure seekers - a style of accommodation that the Owner’s hotel (on the adjacent lot) does not offer.
The building’s design - its form, window treatment and signage - is a contemporary response to surrounding commercial and industrial heritage structures. The building directs our gaze to the natural world (pointing to views of the lake and mountains beyond) while correcting deficiencies in the urban environment (infilling a void in the streetscape). The Grand distinguishes itself as a contemporary building in Nelson’s heritage downtown, yet it seamlessly weaves itself into the urban fabric.
