Owning a nearby sawmill which manufactures Western Red Cedar, the Client desired a home that featured and celebrated wood. Wood is expressed throughout this house, both as a primary structural element (in the cadenced, exposed glulams) and as a finishing material (for walls, ceilings, floors, millwork, and featured architectural elements).

Rigorous attention to structural detailing permits windows and large sliding glass walls to meet the underside of the glulam roof. Wood and glass are exposed, left bare to frame impressive views of Kootenay Lake. Supporting steel beams are concealed, invisible and left to the imagination. Despite the roof’s duty to provide structure and shelter, it is expressed with a light touch, and at times appears to float above the home.
